The Greek community in Ethiopia today numbers about 500 persons. Most people of the current population are half Greek - half Ethiopian. The first presence of a Greek community dates back to the beginning of the 18th century with the arrival of Greek craftsmen and sailors in what was then Abyssinia.
In the post-war period the number of Diaspora Greeks in Ethiopia reached 3.000. However, the Revolution which overthrew Haile Selassie in 1974 and the ensuing confiscation of assets, as well as the general hostile stance towards foreign communities led to a dramatic reduction in the Greek community.
Today there is still a Greek school located in Addis Ababa and in Dire Dawa as well as two Greek Orthodox churches in the same cities.
